Grinding Damage and Characterization of Machinable Ceramic LaPO4/Al2O3

  • Grinding is one of the most important method for machining of ceramic.LaPO4/Al2O3 machinable ceramic was grinded by the surface grinding machine,and the grinding removal mechanism,grinding damage,and changes of mechanical properties induced by grinding damage were investigated.The results show that there are two forms of grinding removal of the LaPO4/Al2O3 machinable ceramic,brittle removal and plastic deformation removal.Grinding damage on the surface and sub-surface is obvious and the grinding damage layer thickness is about 15 μm.Because the grinding damage,the hardness and the bending strength of the material decreased to some extent,which is mainly related to the brittle removal.
